In particular for doctoral students, presentations of research findings on posters offer a good opportunity for introducing their own work at conferences in a focussed manner and engaging in a scientific dialogue. That entails two challenges: On the one hand the poster should be designed to that it “works” without an in-person explanation and represents the responsible individuals in a positive manner. On the other hand, the objective of the actual poster session is to clearly illustrate one's own expertise without seeming arrogant or unsure of oneself. Many long-standing research co-operation groups started in front of poster boards.
The one-day workshop takes both challenges as starting points. The participants compile basic principles for good poster presentation and develop structure and content for their own poster. In addition, presentations and question-and-answer sessions are practiced in “hands-on” rehearsal sessions.

Your benefits from participation

  • Learning how to “sell your work in 10 seconds” – or: What are the key characteristics of a good poster?
  • Developing composition and structure for your own poster
  • Getting a checklist for systematic preparation
  • Training the oral presentation with video-support and receiving intensive feedback
  • Learning how to deal with difficult or awkward questions
  • Planning an effective follow-up after poster sessions

Workshop Framework

Throughout the workshop, professional input from the trainer will alternate with practical exercises. You will be working on your own poster presentations. Each participant receives a script with in-depth information, checklists and worksheets, all of which can be used after the workshop for further reflection and as an aide to applying the knowledge gained.
If the group consist of international and German participants, the working language will be English. If the group consists only of German students, the working language will be German. However, the presentation exercises will be held in English.

Workshop Participants

The workshop is most useful for students who are about to present a poster at a meeting or a conference.
In order to assure that the workshop is targeted to fit the precise needs of the group, we ask the participants to fill out a questionnaire about their needs and expectations. In this way we are able to take the individual situation of each participant into account.
