Two young researchers from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) have received an invitation to the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting. The 65th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting will take place from June 28 to July 3, 2015 with a record number of 65 Nobel laureates. The annual event focuses on encounters between the Nobel laureates and leading young researchers from around the world, as well as scientific dialog. The organizers’ selection committee has chosen over 650 outstanding students, doctoral candidates and postdocs from the disciplines of medicine and physiology, physics and chemistry, who will come to Lindau on Lake Constance from 88 countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The selected young participants can expect a six-day program with numerous lectures and panel discussions. Many see the opportunity to present their own research work in one of the master’s degree classes as a special opportunity. Exchange, networking and inspiration have been at the heart of the conferences since they were founded in 1951. The four participants from Mainz are looking forward to discussions with colleagues from the fields of medicine, nuclear physics and Pharmaceutical Sciences, but also to interdisciplinary exchange. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas B\u00f6se works at the Institute of Pathology at Mainz University Medical Center and is involved in the application of bioprocess engineering methods for the development of new biomaterial-based treatment approaches in the field of bone tissue engineering. “I am particularly looking forward to getting to know other scientists with a similar interdisciplinary mentality at the meeting and to thinking outside the box, so to speak, at various events,” said B\u00f6se. He also expects the presence of the Nobel laureates to create an inspiring and motivating atmosphere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her doctorate at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Vera G\u00fclpers is working on theoretical calculations of the strong interaction, the force that is responsible for holding atomic nuclei together, for example. At low energies, such calculations can only be carried out using numerical methods and supercomputers. This enables, for example, the theoretical clause of the structure of nucleons, i.e. the particles that make up atomic nuclei. “It’s great to be able to take part in this meeting. After all, it’s not every day that you get the opportunity to meet Nobel laureates. I’m also particularly looking forward to exchanging ideas with young scientists from other fields,” emphasizes G\u00fclpers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Miha Mihovilovic also works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, where he is primarily concerned with structural studies of light atomic nuclei. Hydrogen, for example, has attracted a great deal of interest in recent years because the best current measurements of its nuclear radius do not agree with each other. The discrepancy is the subject of heated debate because it cannot be attributed to experimental errors and therefore calls into question our understanding of the fundamental laws of physics. “The Lindau meeting represents a unique opportunity to meet extraordinary personalities who, with their enthusiasm and passion for research, have managed to become the best in their field,” says Mihovilovic. The meeting also offers the chance to meet co-workers from different scientific disciplines, exchange ideas, broaden horizons and develop new thoughts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ira Schmid is working on her doctoral thesis at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biochemistry – Therapeutic Life Sciences on the development of nanomaterials with enzyme-like properties, which should open up new possibilities in cancer therapy. “As I myself am working on a very interdisciplinary topic at the intersection of chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, biology and medicine, I hope that the meeting in Lindau will give me new ideas and impetus for my own work,” explains the doctoral student. According to Schmid, the meetings with scientists from other countries and with Nobel laureates offer the opportunity to build up a fascinating academic network. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
