PRISMA+ offers short-term internships at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz to outstanding bachelor’s and master’s degree graduates in physics. A “PRISMA+ Internship” lasts between eight and twelve weeks. During this time, supervision is provided by a scientist from the cluster. From the winter semester 2022/23, travel expenses will be reimbursed at a flat rate for the duration of the internship, depending on the distance:

  • up to 500 km journey: 250 euros
  • up to 1000 km journey: 500 euros
  • for a journey of over 1000 km: 700 euros

In addition, accommodation costs will be reimbursed as a lump sum depending on the duration of the internship:

  • for 8 weeks stay: 1400 euros
  • for 9 weeks stay: 1575 euros
  • for 10 weeks stay: 1750 euros
  • for 11 weeks stay: 1925 euros
  • for 12 weeks stay: 2100 euros

The PRISMA+ coordination office offers support in finding accommodation. Please note that living expenses and daily allowances cannot be covered.

The University of Mainz offers an excellent research environment and outstanding research facilities in the field of particle and hadron physics. Students can expect excellent learning and professional development opportunities within the PRISMA+ Cluster of Excellence “Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions and Structure of Matter”. During their internship, candidates will work in one or more areas of particle and hadron physics within a research group of the cluster.

The internships at the university of Mainz are offered all year round. During their stay at the university of Mainz, the candidates support experienced researchers in their laboratories. The aim of the internship is to familiarize potential doctoral candidates with the research facilities and research opportunities at the university of Mainz. Internship candidates also have the opportunity to participate in discussions with internationally renowned researchers from the faculty of physics and to attend their seminars and lectures.

The program is open to all outstanding bachelor’s and master’s graduates in physics, preferably with research experience.

How to apply for an internship?
Please fill out our application form completely. In addition, you should send us the following documents to mpa@uni-mainz.de:

  • Letter of motivation (approx. one page) stating your own research interests or the desired work group. A list of our members can be found here. If you are not sure whether your research interests match the specified research group, please contact the respective professor directly. In the letter of intent, you should also briefly explain why you are interested in an internship at JGU and what your professional plans are for the future.
  • Scans of previous study certificates in English (Bachelor / Master)
  • CV (tabular curriculum vitae), including the overall GPA
  • Please arrange for at least one letter of recommendation signed by a supervisor with institutional letterhead to be sent separately to the above-mentioned email address

Summer Internship (preferred stay between April and September): January 31
Winter Internship (preferred stay between October and March): July 01

You will receive a short confirmation from our office by e-mail after submitting your documents. We will then check whether your documents meet the requirements for participation in the PRISMA+ Internship Program. You will be informed of the result of the selection procedure within a few weeks.
