PhD Fellowship-Programm

The new Collaborative Research Center (CRC) “Hadrons and Nuclei as Discovery Tools” at JGU want to give doctoral students the opportunity to conduct research in an attractive and international environment together with renowned scientists. They will be given the opportunity to work at an innovative local research infrastructure as well as to participate in large-scale experiments worldwide as part of a large research community.

The selected candidates will get a funding contract as well as individual travel and research funds. They will be able to participate in all the CRC activities, including lecture courses, seminars, retreats, summer schools, workshops and social events.

For the CRC Fellowships application call in 2024, we offer PhD positions in the following topics:

• Beyond Standard Model Searches Involving Hadrons (Project Pillar B)
• Interface Between Hadron and Nuclear Physics (Project Pillar H)
• Nuclei and Astrophysics (Project Pillar N)

Successful candidates are expected to start the fellowship from October of 2024. Interviews are foreseen to take place on the week of September 2nd, and will be held online.

Applicants must demonstrate outstanding performance in their studies and are expected to hold or obtain a Masters’ degree in the following areas:

  • Experimental Particle, Hadron and Nuclear Physics
  • Theoretical Particle, Hadron and Nuclear Physics
  • Atomic Physics and Precision Observables

How to apply for a fellowship?


The call for applications starts on July 8th, 2024. Application deadline for the current call for proposals is August 18th, 2024.

After submitting the application form, please send your complete application documents as a single pdf file (only the documents listed under "application documents") to mpa@uni-mainz.de.

Please arrange for two signed letters of recommendation, with institutional letterhead, to be sent separately to the above address. Please, also arrange that the referees submit the complete referee form together with the letter of recommendation. Letters of recommendation and the referee forms have to be sent directly by the senior scientists.

Application documents:

  • Detailed curriculum vitae
  • Cover letter including a short motivation statement
  • Scans of university degrees including transcripts of records (lists of courses with your grades) in German or English
  • Candidates who have obtained their degrees from a university where English is not one of the teaching languages must prove their language proficiency (B2 level or higher) by a certificate not older than three years.

All documents may be submitted in English or German. Documents in any other language must be translated and legally certified by the German embassy, consulate or a certified translator.
